todays study skills - oh noooo

Hi everybody - had a "feeling" about this one..

After about two hours of trying to figure out why my internet wasnt reaching the Polytech (cursing the satellite dishes whoops) I finally rang IT support at Polytech and the whole OP internet is down and has been since 10am... so we wont do a Study Skills today and I am happy to repeat the session next week instead? Same time? Tuesday 1 - 2pm... or a better alternative for me woudl be a bit earlier - say 10.30 - 11.30am Tuesday?

Hands up for which time and we can go with the consensus - Let me know as a blogged response to this one.. or via email.

What we were about to cover was an integration of time management with the personal learning and self assessment - the notes are useful!

Lovely to catch up last evening - hope I set your minds whizzing around - it is all drawig to you setting up a professional profile so hope you aretaking heaps of notes??

And.. your next Massage Practical sessions are going to be awesome - you have Irene day 1 and David day 2 - Take the time to clarify what you need for your examination - double check you know which day you are being a client and which day you are being a practitioner
and
I have asked David (not Irene) that you spend a bit of time with the Google docs - I gather there is a wee bit of difficulty and confusion there? Also any other questions (about practicals etc - let him know.

Irene will be great to ask about the anatomy as she has written the latest version of that course!! Some of you were asking about exams etc.

Kindest from me and here's to a happier internet connection soon.

Study Skills today

HI there
everybody I have seen today in Auckland has said it looks like rain - funny that - it rains everyday in Auckland!!!

Here is the Elluminate link for Study Skills...

look forward to catching up - I want to do a check in wiht the next few assignments as they are a rounding up of our massage experience. To focus them - I want to take us through some concepts and practical ways of buidling a reflective practice... this will come back into play next term in your Communications course...

Each of your assignments need to have a reflective componenet - it is very much part of the rpofessional practice approach Check out the reflective blogger rubric - on the course page.... if this reflection has been detailed in your assignment - then you will be marked against this as criteria.

See you soon.

Todays Elluminate

Today's Study Skills Elluminate is set up to go and I have decide to let you have a go at running a study group online. This is because we are doing well in relation to course content delivery - but less well in getting the assignments various in...

http://elluminate.tekotago.ac.nz:80/join_meeting.html?meetingId=1246924016604

This is also an online opportunity to sort out and discuss the issues of sustainability SS A Task 5 - next weeks Fundamentals session links in with this in relation to environmental sustainability/ economic sustainability/ social sustainability

I have had a go at making and sharing a google doc but may need David's technical support - in which case we will get that set up when he is available. Carry on with your blogs and meetings in the meantime it is "Interesting reading"!

I have attached the prompts to your emails - if you want to have a go at making a google doc - go ahead but share it with me!! as a collaborator!! Or in the meantime use the prompts as guidelines for your contributions.

And for those of you who are still wading through the other assessment tasks use the checklist on the email:

The problem with not making due by dates is that:

a. you get behind and it is a horrible feeling

b. your class mates miss you

c. you lose the option of resitting your assessments (both practical and theory)

Well have a great time....

Kind regards

Elluminate session 2 - Tuesday 9th June 1 - 2 pm

Hi group

Hope you have been happily practicing your new set of massage skills since last week. I was inspired to massage some family members as a result. I find it fascinating that I can learn as a teacher - more about the very things I am supposed to know - hope some of you end up being teachers too!!

This week in Elluminate - Study Skills will explore:

Assessment task page - I have checked both our Study Skills course blog (review David's intro to learning post) and the Google document - go to Certificate of Relaxation massage - Part Time (PT) and scroll down the Study Skills course page assessment tasks. You will see this course has 8. You will already have embarked on Tasks 1 and 2.

Task 3 - Feed aggregation - Means sending me a regular email to check in about what you are receiving in your Feed readers. More about this tomorrow.

Study Skills Assessment Task 3 – Blog - Feed aggregation/check in on learning – 25May-5Jun. I have already requested three reflective blogs from you - makes these the Feed aggregates for this due date and 8-19Jun. Next dates are 29Jun-10July. 20-31July.

Task 4 - Learning Strategies - Last weeks session was about the various learning strategies at your beck. Please read through your notes from the last Elluminate (recording available by going back into the Elluminate date and finding the recordings tab on the upper left hand corner - click!!) and also access the following article: Kizlik, B (February, 2009). Effective Study Skills . You can click the title, which I have linked and is underlined or cut and paste this url into a Google search - http://www.adprima.com/studyout.htm

SS AT 4 – Written – Approaches to learning checklist – Monday 15th June - change of due date as we get our heads around the tasks and online learning..

I am also keen to set up the Time Management Power Point and take us through that discussion - this is in preparation for Assessment Task 7. An alternative reference is the Wikipedia entry on Time Management

SS AT 7 – Blog/ Written - Time management chart – Friday 31 July

That 'll probably be enough - so set yourselves a couple of questions and here's to all out microphones working - p.s. remember to give yourself plenty of time and have the HelpDesk number handy in case of technic problems - 0800 765 948.

See you there

Next week's Elluminate Study Skills preparation

Hi all

1. Next week is our first Elluminate session for the Study Skills course.
If you are nervous about getting into the meeting - use David's Wikipedia suggestion for notes about Elluminate -
or alternatively Google search for a live tutorial of how to use Elluminate. There are a number of Youtube ones as well..
Also make sure that you give yourself 10 minutes prior to set up to try it and sort out any internet issues.
Done panic if you dont know - or cant get on becuase we will record the session and in your own time you can get back into Elluminate and click recordings to find it.

2. By now you will have had at least a couple of practices of the Blog.. this is an assessed item so please make sure you get going.

On Tuesday I am going to take us though the Study Skills Assessment Schedule and focus on Time management. Go to the course page and have a look at section highlighted - its a wiki educator page.

and if we have time...
APA referencing.... joy!

See you all.

Intro to online learning

Here’s a list of tasks for Friday & the week ahead to get you familiar with online learning. Some of you are bound to find it a little difficult getting your head around RSS feeds & blogging, but hang in there. It gets easier.

Task 1 – Setting up your browser

Set up your browser homepages. This video will show you how to set up your browser homepage to include

Task 2 – Subscribe to your classmates blogs

If you haven't already, subscribe to your classmates blogs and set them up within a folder in Google reader.

Task 3 – Read & comment on your classmates blogs

If you can relate to something that your classmates have posted in their introductory blog posts, scroll down to the bottom of the post, and click on comment. Then make a comment. :-)

Task 4 - Get familiar with the programme page

Have a good look at the programme page for the part-time Certificate (should by now be one of the pages in your browser if you've followed the steps above). Notice that there are some active links (blue) and some non-active links. Familiarise yourself with the types of information that are accessible through this page.

The Learning support page is particularly useful for you at this stage of study. It's designed to help you identify where to go if you need to get support for academic or computer-related difficulties.

Task 5 - Get familiar with the student portal

Have a look around the student portal. Remember to add it to your favourites (Internet Explorer), or bookmark it (Mozilla Firefox) so that if you need to get here again, it'll be saved for you.

Task 6
- OP IT Induction

Early next week we will give you some information on how you can continue progressing through the OP IT Induction course. Over the next week I suggest that you put some time into this.

Task 7 - Getting prepared for elluminate

We do not have any elluminate sessions this week, however please make it a priority to prepare yourself for getting started in elluminate next week by working through the learning module - Your first elluminate session.

Once you've done this, please try to log into the massage common room (you can find it on the programme page)
. If you have any connection problems remember that you can ring the OP student services desk on 0800 Poly IT (0800 765 948).

Phew! That was a long post.

Remember that you can get in touch with Felicity or I anytime that you have a question through email or on the phone.
